The Yee Peng Festival, Chiang Mai, Thailand

" A Truly Unforgettable Memory !"

yee peng festival

The Yee Peng Festival.....if you happen to be in Chiang Mai or northern Thailand between 20th & 21st November 2010......and you want to see possibly the finest display of "magical Thai floating lanterns" read on....

To see the most incredible Loy Krathong / Yee Peng Festival you need to visit the Yee Peng Sansai Floating Lantern Ceremony which takes place at the Buddhist Meditation Center, Tudong Ka Sathaan Lanna, which is directly behind the Mae Jo Agricultural University in San Sai District, Chiang Mai some 15-20 minutes from the center of Chiang Mai.

The event is this year held on Saturday 20th November and commences in the afternoon with various fundraising activities, around 6 pm the students from Mae Jo University will exhibit the Krathongs (floats) they have constructed purely from natural materials, local folk music is played, there will also be Krathongs on sale for those who have not brought their own.

Just before sunset several thousand candles will be lit on the circular terraces of the open field. Around 7.30pm the multiple releasing of literally thousands of Khom Loys (hot air lanterns) will commence……the skies for miles around are lit up by this exquisite show…….you will also have the opportunity to launch your Krathong in the lake at the Buddhist Meditation Center.

There are also stands offering local & traditional Lanna style food dishes, the evening will end around 8pm.

Tip: DO NOT FORGET YOUR CAMERA OR VIDEO RECORDER!
