Where to See Loy Krathong in Chiang Mai

by Lesley
(USA )

Hi there,

I will be visiting Chiang Mai around the time of the Loy Krathong festival. I was wondering where in the city is the best place to view the festival, especially the launching of the lanterns. Also, what time does the launching of the lanterns usually happen? Thank you.

Lesley G

Last minute search for lots of lanterns
by: Anonymous

It's probably too late to ask, but I went to see the lanterns last night in Chiang Mai by the Nawarat Bridge and I only saw one or two lanterns go up at the same time and a scant few in the sky. I didn't see anything like the photo on this page and was very sad.

I'm wondering if it was too late in the evening (9:30 or 10ish). What time do they start and what time is the big send off?

I was so looking forward to it and if tonight will be similar I don't want to miss it!

Thank you!

The Loy Krathong Festival, Chiang Mai
by: Kevin (Administration)

Hi Lesley

Many thanks for visiting our website & for your subsequent questions.

If you are in Chiang Mai during the Loy Krathong Festival you are in for a real treat!.

Personally I would recommend you earmark the night of the 20th November for the Yee Peng Festival which takes place at the Buddhist Meditation Center, Tudong Ka Sathaan Lanna, which is directly behind the Mae Jo Agricultural University in San Sai District, Chiang Mai some 15-20 minutes from the center of Chiang Mai.

This place is where the mass release of the "floating lanterns" takes place.

For both the nights of 20th & 21st November the "hottest" places to see both the launching of the "Krathongs" & the "floating lanterns" are the areas along the Ping River near the Narrawat Bridge & the areas around the moat near the Thapae Gate (the old walled city).

Have a great time!

Kind Regards
Kevin
