Weather, Songkran
& Ayurvedic Treatments?

Ayurvedic treatments in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Ayurvedic treatments in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Hello,

My partner and I have just booked our first trip to Thailand from Australia (yay!) and arrive on the 25th March into Bangkok.

We are planning on having a few days in Bangkok ,then flying to Krabi for 2 days in the South then back to mainland to visit temples etc. before catching the train to Chiang Mai for about 10 days.

If we arrive in the North in early-mid April will the SMOG or Smoke Pollution be too thick for us to go on bushwalks etc.? I do get a bit of asthma and I my travel agent didnt tell me it would be a problem - but I just saw it on your site today.

Also, do you know of any good places to go for Ayurvedic treatments or short courses? We are both natural therapists and we would love to see gardens and traditional herbal areas/markets etc. and also experience traditional herbal treatments if possible.

Thanks for kindly for your help,
Marie-Lou

Weather, Songkran & Ayurvedic Treatments?
by: Kevin (Administration)

Hi Marie-Lou

Many thanks for your questions, I will endeavour to answer as honestly as possible.

In terms of the current "smoke screen" that covers all of the north of Thailand, unfortunately none of the travel companies warn of this, but it is an annual problem this time of year due to the Swidden Agriculture still practised in this area & the Weather & Climate whereby this time of year there is typically no rain or wind, so the dense smog just sits on the plateau that Chiang Mai is located on, with the mountains all around trapping the still air!!.

The saving grace we have is that the Songkran Festival which this year is between 13th-15th April(inclusive), and is a "must visit" is a huge visitor draw for Chiang Mai, so starting from now the government has already initiated the annual "rain-making" process, which is whereby military aircraft drop chemicals over the complete area, these chemicals believe it or not help the formation of clouds, which in turn brings rain & hey presto the pollution disappears just in time for Songkran!!.

So if you visit anytime at or after Songkran the pollution will be gone. Apologies for an extended explanation, but I hope you are interested in the background stuff as well.

In terms of the Ayurvedic treatments or short courses, I have 3x personal recommendations from friends:

Amaravati Ayurveda Resort

Chiang Mai Ayurvedic Center

Dr Eddy Clinic

All three are in Chiang Mai & I am sure will offer exactly what you are interested in. One garden I can personally recommend in Chiang Mai is Dokmai Garden which is just outside Chiang Mai, but a very interesting place to visit to see the flora & fauna of northern Thailand.

In terms of the Daily Markets its great fun just wandering around these, the largest of which is Muang Mai
which is the wholesale market that mainly supplies the restaurants & hotels, but well worth a wander!.

I hope that this has provided you with useful information, if you have further questions, please just contact us again, we are always happy to help.

Kind Regards

Kevin
