Is it better to use electronic transfer from a US bank to a thai bank,or have it directly mailed to me in Thailand, or can they (USGovt.)send it directly to a Thai bank account? Also, how do I go about setting up an 800000 BHT or more bank account in Chaing Mai?

Setting up a bank in Thailand

Hi

What I would recommend you do is to open a US$ bank account in your name in Chiang Mai, this can then be used for both receiving your monthly pension check as a direct transfer and can also be used as the 800,000thb bank balance for your Thai retirement visa.

To open a US$ bank account you need to visit a main branch of either SCB or Kasikorn Bank in Chiang Mai with your passport, house rental agreement or similar and a US bank statement which should then be enough to allow you to open the required account.

You then need to just visit the actual bank once a month to withdraw your pension as Thai Baht.

I have been using the very same system for 5 years now and it works perfectly!.
