Travelling from Koh Samui to Chiang Mai, Thailand

by Frank Stevens
(British Columbia, Canada)

Hi

A group of 6 people will be spending a week on Koh Samui in October, then travelling to Chiang Mai for a further week before heading home from Bangkok.

Please could you advise the most cost effective ways to travel between the islands & the north of Thailand?

Thanks

We're doing this tomorrow - and we're flying. That's not the most cost effective but it's the most likely way to keep you mentally sane.

You can also take a ferry to the mainland and then the train, the bus, or some combo of the two. But it's around 12 hours to Bangkok and then another 12 hours to Chiang Mai on the train. At least then you have sleeper berths. The bus is probably cheapest but also not recommended unless you stop in Bangkok.
