Sukhothai from Chiang Mai?

Hello,

I'll be coming to Thailand for the first time in November. I will be spending time in Chiang Mai for the Loy Krathong festival, but also want to photograph ancient temples, etc.

I definitely want to visit Sukhothai. Would I be able to base myself in Chiang Mai and visit Sukhothai during the day or are they too far apart for a day trip?

Hi Mark

Chiang Mai is a great place to use as a base to explore northern Thailand but is quite a distance away from Sukhothai.

I would recommend that you travel back from Chiang Mai to Bangkok by road and take a couple of days out to visit the old Kingdom cities of Ayutthaya & Sukhothai on route......both are incredibly beautiful & spiritual places!.

Chiang Mai is said to have over 300 Buddhist temples......so you will definitely be kept busy.

Thanks Kevin. Travel by road...how? I won't have a rental car or bike. Can you suggest another method by road?

Hi Mark

Apologies, I should have mentioned that I suggest that you travel by bus from Chiang Mai to Sukhothai & Ayutthaya. The re are buses to all major cities in Thailand leaving Chiang Mai daily, you will just need to book a seat a couple of days ahead of when you want to travel.
