Please Can You Offer Any Opinion?

by Nigel
(U.K.)

Hi
I'm a 42 year old UK man I am moving to Thailand in November & i'm thinking about living in Chiang Mai as I have a 9 year old son by my late wife who was Thai.

My son however does not speak any Thai, do you think it would be better for him to learn Thai at home first, then put him into a good local Thai school?.

I don't really like the idea of International Schools & also they are expensive. If you have better ideas about his schooling please could you let me know.

Any additional information on Thai/Farang kids in Chiang Mai would be really useful.

All the best Nigel

Hi Nigel

Chiang Mai is a great choice as a city for you to live in & your son to grow up in. There are many foreign residents here, there are also Expats clubs & forums, so if you would like to meet with others who have moved to Chiang Mai, its easy to do.

In terms of your sond eduacation & learning Thai, I have had a chat with my Thai wife Rose who knows several "Thai/Farang" couples with children, and what she strongly suggests is that you start off by enrolling him into the Ambassador Bi-Lingual School here in Chiang Mai, its a good school particularly for mixed couples with children, its also considerably cheaper than the International Schools.

As well as the bi-lingual school we also recommend that you supply him with tuition at home, so that he learns as much as possible, as quickly as possible, as the age that he already is at, its important to get him up to speed on the Thai language as quick as you can, so that he does not miss out.

I hope this information has been of use to you, please do not hesitate to contact us again if we can help further.

Regards Kevin
