The number one visitor attraction in Chiang Mai is without doubt Doi Suthep/Doi Pui National Park, which contains both the world famous Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep Temple and Bhubing Palace which is the Winter Palace of the Thai Royal Family, the Palace itself is not open to the public, but the beautifully landscaped gardens with their mixture of exotic flowers & ornamental plants, all set in the peace & tranquility of a mountain retreat, are worth the visit just on their own. Each year the National Park is visited by well over 3 million people, one useful tip, try and avoid any Thai National Holiday's, on these particular days you can queue most of the way up the 13km mountain ascent !.
"While planning our trip to Thailand, I was looking for a wildlife adventure that would allow us to interact with the animals rather than just view them in a zoo type setting -- or even worse interact with them in a carnival/circus type atmosphere."
"Whilst surfing the net at home one day I came across the
Patara Elephant Farm in Chiang Mai".
"After investigating the site further I found a tab headed "Elephant Owner for a Day" and thought, this is it, this is the program we have been looking for!".
And low & behold it was one of the most memorable days of my life !!. - Thadd and Alice Palmer, Massachusetts, U.S.A.
Chiang Mai Zoo: Located on the same road that leads to Doi Suthep is the 210 acre Chiang Mai Zoo.
The zoo opened in 2003, and is now home to well over 7,500 animals as well as the brand new Aquarium that houses over 250 species of freshwater & saltwater fish, and has the longest underground walkway in the world !! - not to be missed.
The zoo last year attracted well over 750,000 visitors, but that figure will increase dramatically over the next few years with the new aquarium attraction. A visit to Chiang Mai Zoo is highly recommended.
Are you ready to soar like a bird from tree to tree in the northern Thailand rain forests?.
If you ever fancied acting like Tarzan Flight of the Gibbon is a recently added adrenalin packed zip line Tour that allows you the opportunity to do just that.
The tour is located within the ancient rainforests on the Jae Zorn National Park some one hour’s drive from Chiang Mai near the village of Mae Kompong.
Cookery Schools: over the last few years have become an ever increasing element of MANY tourists planned vacations to Chiang Mai.
With the burgeoning global popularity for all Asian dishes & particularly that of Thai Cuisine ,a host of cookery schools have sprouted up all around the area.
We have spent time looking at the various choices so that we could provide a useful guide to the Chiang Mai Cookery Schools and suggest an option that provides the best quality of instruction, facilities & overall value for money to the visitor.
Night Market / Bazaar: Open every evening of the year, covering a three block radius of Chan Klan Road in the centre of the city the Night Bazaar dominates everything around it.
The market opens from 6pm until midnight and offers a huge range of artisan handicrafts such as hilltribe silver, woodcarvings, silk items, jade & ceramics as well as just about every other conceivable souvenier imagineable including copy watches, tee-shirts & designer brands.Haggling IS compulsory !.
The whole market always has a really good atmosphere, which is further enhanced by a wide range of local restaurants offering a superb selection of international cuisine including not only Thai food but also Chinese food, Asian food & even Western food !!.
For those looking for more "active" places of interest, the opportunities for top quality trekking in Northern Thailand are quite outstanding. There are many different tour companies, offering countless different Trekking options, you just need to decide what you want to do & go for it !!.
Tours go from just a single day right up to a month in duration, and from the "countryside stroll" bracket, right up to almost "military style" training !!.
The Elephant Nature Park located in the Mae Taeng Valley 60kms north of Chiang Mai is an outstanding place to visit. The Park operates as both a sanctuary & a rescue centre for distressed & sick Asian Elephants from all over Thailand. If you are interested in working with elephants, in a very relaxed, natural & ethical environment this is a great excursion for you.
The Tiger Kingdom & Restaurant, one of Chiang Mai's latest tourist attractions opened its doors for business just under a year ago. The "Kingdom" is located on the Maesa road just outside Mae Rim approximately 18kms (11miles) from Chiang Mai and takes around 20-30 minutes by Taxi to get there.
As you wander around the world famous Chiang Mai Night Bazaar you are bound to spot several street vendors selling tee-shirts with the words "Pai 762" emblazoned across them, ever wondered what that short sentence relates to?."Pai 762" relates to the amount of curves in the road on the mountainous journey between Chiang Mai & the "magical" town of Pai!.
