“But man is a frivolous and incongruous creature, and perhaps, like a chess
player, loves the process of the game, not the end of it.”
Notes from the Underground by Dostoyevsky
*Paul Keres* ( *January 7* , 1916 – June 5, 1975), was an Estonian chess
grandmaster, and a renowned chess writer. He was among the world’s top
players from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s.
He was nicknamed “Paul the Second”, “The Eternal Second” and “The Crown
Prince of Chess”. Keres was the only player in chess history to defeat nine
undisputed world champions.

In 1985, Thailand’s Mass Communications Organization banned One Night in
Bangkok, saying its lyrics “cause misunderstanding about Thai society and
show disrespect towards Buddhism.”[2] (Wikipedia)
It’s a song about – chess. It’s hinting on western view of Thailand and its
night life in a dialogue of one chess lover and one nightlife afficionado,
so I guess that was the reason it was banned there. Thais are quite a nice
and polite people, so there had to be something really insulting in lyrics
for them to ban the song.
And, given the fact that we were visiting Thailand at a time when
temperatures reached 39 degrees Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) and spent whole
days walking around and visiting temples, I beg to change the lyrics of the
song to this:
“Siam’s gotta be the witness
To the ultimate test of cardiovascular fitness”
