Doi Mae Salong Teas
- & Our Online Shop

Doi Mae Salong Teas

Doi Mae Salong teas are famous the world over particularly for the Taiwanese style black "Oolong" variety grown in this area, which many agree are some of the finest available anywhere in the world.

The mountainous terrain & climate in this area are ideal for the production of tea, the majority of which is still consumed within Thailand as the Thai's are avid tea & coffee drinkers!.

Doi Mae Salong is located some 45kms (30 miles) north of the Mae Chan district in Chiang Rai province & is close to the north-western border that Thailand shares with Myanmar (Burma). The terrain is "rugged" to say the least & at a height of some 1500 meters(1 mile) above sea-level it's average annual temperature of 25C is cool and refreshing all year round, which are the absolute perfect conditions to grow teas in!!.

The Doi Mae Salong teas are however not just about traditional types of tea, there are also a fabulous range of both herbal & green teas available as well!.

The background history of the Doi Mae Salong teas is also very interesting:

* the area was traditionally a part of the "Golden Triangle" and was an important center to the vast areas of opium production that took place throughout northern Thailand in the early 20th century.

* the majority of the inhabitants of Doi Mae Salong are actually of Chinese descendancy from the Yunnan Province in south-western China, where their forefathers having fought & then escaped the Chinese Revolution in 1949, even today "Mandarin" Chinese is the most common language in the area! .

* The Chinese descendants actually arrived in Northern Thailand in 1961, having been ejected from Burma(Myanmar) by the Burmese army, having settled in the mountainous areas of northern Thailand, they set about growing cash-crops of opium to help subsidize their meagre existances.

* During the 1960's the Chinese settlers were granted "refugee status" and efforts were made to accommodate them within the Thai nation, but this mainly failed as the draw of opium production proved too strong!.

* It was during the 1980's that following the personal involvement of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the areas around Doi Mae Salong were transformed largely from opium production by the creation of crop-substitution programmes to encourage the Chinese settlers & local Hill Tribes to cultivate tea, coffee, corn and fruit trees.

* At the same time the name of Doi Mae Salong was changed to Santikhiri meaning "Hill of Peace" & a formal road was built to the area, prior to which everything was moved by packhorses through the jungles!.

* The area around Doi Mae Salong (it is still better known by this name than as Santikhiri) now attracts around 200,000 visitors a year, these are mainly backpackers as the area still has elements of the "wild west" about it!.

* Doi Mae Salong has now been designated an OTOP (One Village One Product) tourism village by the Thai government, promoting it as a tourist destination offering a wide choice of accommodations, restaurants & not surprisingly TEA SHOPS!.

Our Online Tea Shop

Doi Mae Salong Teas Having seen (and tasted) the wonderful Doi Mae Salong teas first-hand, we thought it might be a nice idea to make the wonderful black, green & herbal teas found around Doi Mae Salong available to all the visitors to our website.

So, we proudly announce the arrival of our "Online Tea Shop" where we will be offering a wide range of the finest teas grown in Northern Thailand, if not the whole of Asia!.

All the varieties we sell are sourced directly from the families of the original Chinese settlers or local hill tribe families, so the income from our sourcing stays & benefits the local economy, NOT some multi-national conglomerate!.

We do not subscribe to the general trend of "over-packaging" consumer goods so most of the herbal teas will actually arrive in clear sealed plastic bags, with full description & instructions in English attached, ALL handwritten!. Those varieties that are "air-sealed" at source, will also have descriptions & instruction attached.

As several of these varieties are possibly likely to be unknown to you, we do offer a "sampler" size of most types, with just enough tea leaves to make a couple of cups to ensure you like the taste. All the types of "samplers" available are charged at $1 a sample ,this just covers the cost of the sample & shipping by airmail.

Please ensure you name the tea or give the item number on the Paypal transaction!

*Please Note*
* all prices quoted include free worldwide shipping.
* this item is shipped by Thailand Post Airmail, deliveries worldwide between 14-28 days.
* any taxes or charges levied within the destination country are NOT included within the selling price, and are therefore the responsibility of the buyer.
