Is Chiang Mai Safe For Single Travellers?

I am a 58 year old woman who will be going on holiday for the 1st time on her own. Is Chiang Mai a safe resort? Would you recommend it for my situation? I am active and would like to do the Elephant rides sight seeing and all the normal activities.
